Indigenous Research Support Initiative at UBC (IRSI)

New Website

2019-2020

As part of a complete rebrand, we built a new website for this fledgling unit that supports research collaborations between the University of BC (UBC) and Indigenous community-based partners. The previous website had consisted of a single page plus a separate blog, both of which employed UBC’s basic design template with minimal design and in the university’s relatively conservative navy and grey palette. The intention was to create an online space that was: welcoming and accessible to indigenous people and communities; scalable to grow with the rapidly expanding unit; and equally relevant for the two distinct audiences of UBC researchers and community partners.

The process undertaken included two rounds of engagement with internal and external partners. Built on a Drupal platform, the resulting site features a new, warmer colour scheme, rich imagery, dedicated areas for researchers and community audiences, accessible language, and multi-media content that amplifies Indigenous voices.
